#Torneträsk or Torne träsk, Saami: Duortnosjávri Finnish and Meänkieli: Tornio or Torniojärvi, is a lake in Kiruna Municipality, #Lapland, #Norrbotten County in #Sweden, in the #Scandinavian mountain range. Träsk is the local word for lake (in Standard Swedish it means “#swamp”). It is the sixth largest lake in Sweden, with a total area of 330 square kilometres (130 square miles) and a length of 70 kilometres (43 miles). The lake drains to the south-east through Torne älv. South-west of the lake lie the Abisko National Park and the #UNESCO World Heritage Site #Laponian area.
Torneträsk originated from the remnant of a #glacier, which has given the lake its depth of 168 metres (551 feet), making it the second deepest lake in Sweden. It is usually ice-covered from December through June, with variations dependent on temperature variations.

In the background the mighty Mt. #Nuolja in the #moonlight, #NorthernSami #Njullá, is a mountain at #Torneträsk in #Kiruna municipality, west of #Abisko in northwestern Lapland. Nuolja is partly within #AbiskoNationalPark. The highest point is 1169 meters above sea level, while the nearby mountain peak #Slåttatjåkka measures 1191 meters. Photo taken from the #AbiskoDelta, after a windy storm and that´s why the ice bubbles are visible. Polished by the wind.
Nuolja, is also a #fieldresearch site that stretches across Mt.Njulla. With the mountain to the east, the village of Abisko to the south, and bordering Lake Torneträsk, this is a varied-habitat field site. Mountain birch forests are one of the main appeals of this research site.

#Katterjåkk (nordsamiska: #Gátterjohka), tidigare Vassijaure och Gamla Vassijaure, ligger i Kiruna kommun, vid Europaväg E10 och i närheten av järnvägsstationen Katterjåkk (trafikplatssignatur Kjå) på Malmbanan, 120 kilometer från Kiruna, 2 kilometer från #Riksgränsen och 50 kilometer från #Narvik. Katterjåkk är uppkallat efter jocken med samma namn, som rinner ner från sjön #Katterjaure 4 kilometer bort, förbi och ut i närbelägna sjön #Vassijaure. Det förekommer också att byn stavas #Katterjokk.
I en ingenjörsbyggnad från järnvägsbygget upprättades 1903 “Vassijaure naturvetenskapliga station”, en verksamhet som efter en brand 1910 flyttades till #Abisko och fortsatte under namnet #AbiskoNaturvetenskapligaStation.
2007–2008 byggdes 43 stugor vid Katterjåkk. 2008 öppnades byns Coop Konsumbutik samt restaurangen Ebbes kök. 2009 öppnades lägenhetshotellet i samma hus som Konsumbutiken och restaurangen. I området finns också en husvagnsförening med 60-talet egenägda husvagnsplatser.
Kiruna kommun har byggt ett nytt reningsverk som betjänar Katterjåkk och Riksgränsen, klart 2010.
“Katterjåkk är känt för att regelbundet ha upp till 100–150 cm djup snö om vintrarna, det tjockaste snötäcket av alla SMHI:s mätstationer.”

Permafrost is common in the land around the lake albeit this low elevation permafrost is disappearing because of global warming and increased snowfall.
During the 1944 Operation Obviate of #WWII, British bombers seeking to destroy the German battleship Tirpiz had their rendezvous over Torneträsk Lake, in violation of Swedish neutrality!!!
